“The finest language is mostly made up of simple unimposing words…”

… so said the English novelist Mary Ann Evans – better known to you and I by her pen name, George Eliot.

And I couldn’t agree with her more.

As a news anchor and journalist at Al Jazeera, I have an ongoing fascination with the English language.  The way it has developed and continues to do so is quite extraordinary, and that’s what this blog is all about.

Here you’ll find examples of both brilliant and bewildering work, as well as tidbits which I pick up about the language.  Please feel free to send me anything you find interesting too!
